OK, so Alec Baldwin isn’t going to win Father of the Year in 2007. Or 2008. Or ever. But this really isn’t about piling on him. Of course what he said was awful, but I’m not sure that worldwide humiliation is fair or helpful either. (Too bad about him and Kim Basinger. They made terrific [...]

Here are a few pictures from the girls’ ballet last weekend (they are in a pre-professional company called the Houston Repertoire Ballet). I am not an expert in ballet by any stretch, but I have seen a few of these shows. And this one was the best I’ve seen. Every other account I heard agreed. [...]

Spinal Tap reunites to fight climate change - The satirical movie This is Spinal Tap was such a clever send up of the rock world (“This one goes up to 11 . . . It’s one louder.”). My fears were confirmed when I discovered that they would be supporting Al Gore’s efforts and not mocking them. If [...]

Diversity programs at businesses and schools tend to be disingenuous (lacking in frankness, candor, or sincerity) and hopelessly mired in PC-land. It is a shame, too, because if companies used them properly they could be fabulous recruiting and retention tools.
I believe in true diversity. The groups I have managed have always been diverse, and my [...]

I heartily endorse this perspective on philanthropy made by Forbes back in 1917. They re-ran it as part of a 90th anniversary issue.
Too few millionaires who aspire to win fame as philanthropists begin at home, among their own workers. To grind employees and then donate a million dollars to perpetuate his name is not a [...]

A touching quote from a Houston Chronicle article about California Governor Arnold Swarzenegger’s Earth Day speech on MTV:
When Schwarzenegger ran for governor in 2003, he was criticized for popularizing gas-guzzling Hummers. He has since reduced his personal Hummer fleet to four, two of which he said have since been converted to run on alternative fuels.
Gee, I’m [...]

See below to see the latest installment of my friend Nicholas’ interview with me about Christianity or click here for the whole thing.
Nicholas wrote: Historically, the Bible has been used to justify some pretty atrocious actions. I assume you believe there is one correct interpretation of the Bible and that any interpretation which allowed these actions [...]

No, not moron hell, but more_on Hell. I wanted to add a few thoughts that came up since the last discussion.
We tend to make two opposite but equally bad errors with respect to Hell.
First, we often pretend it doesn’t exist. I’ll admit that I wasn’t paying very close attention the first 28 years or so [...]

I know and respect plenty of vegetarians, so I’m really not trying to poke them with a sharp stick here. People are vegetarians for different reasons such as health concerns or animal rights. I agree that there should be guidelines for raising and processing livestock.
The Bible notes that animals are one of God’s special creations, even [...]

I haven’t read all the details, but this looks like good news:
The Supreme Court upheld the nationwide ban on a controversial abortion procedure Wednesday, handing abortion opponents the long-awaited victory they expected from a more conservative bench.

So what does it mean? Here are some random thoughts.
As The Voice of the Reason noted in the comments section, a [...]

I realize that not all pacifists are pro-choice, but it occurred to me that nearly all the pacifists I am aware of personally and publicly are. That is about the biggest oxymoron I can think of. Remember, 99% of murders are due to abortion.
Note that when I say pacifist I am using the Dictionary.com definition of [...]

I thought the questions from the LA Times piece below deserved a response. It is another one of those pieces designed to advance the gay agenda by portraying gays sympathetically while demonizing anyone with the audacity to call their movement into question.
The author goes on at length asking why straight people hate gays, but it is [...]

Update: Please be sure to view the comments section if you read this post. Doug assures me that I misunderstood him, so in fairness you’ll want to read his comments.

I don’t agree with everything James Dobson says, but I listen to his Podcast many days and value what he does with his Focus on the Family ministry. My girls seem to like his teen magazine (Brio).
Many of Dobson’s critics don’t appear to listen to his shows, view his site or read their material. You [...]
