Lots o’ links about Palin at this post and those that follow it.
Update 8: The ridiculous “cover up” rumors of Palin’s Down Syndrome baby belonging to her daughter have been thoroughly debunked. Nice, big, black eye for the Kos kids. Her daughter is pregnant, and is taking responsbility for it along with the father. Hypocrisy rating: Zero. If she pushed her child to have an abortion, that would be hypocrisy.
Kudos to Obama for asking, in apparent sincerity, to leave the kids out of the attacks, and for not encouraging abortion to avoid the “punishment” of the baby.
Also, on the age thing, Biden has had health issues and is 66 himself. Also, the Dems had no interest in him as President. So why does he make such a dandy replacement if Obama is incapacitated or dies?
Update 7: Sarah vs. Hillary = no contest
Consider: Hillary has spent her whole life in the quest for power. She is a political animal through and through, willing to do what ever it takes to obtain the highest office in the world. —-Speaking of the real world, Sarah Palin is a life long member. No power hungry politico, she. Gov. Palin, by all accounts, is a woman who embodies the best of the female species. Experienced in real life, she is the epitome of what America stands for. She exhibits the traits that have made America great. And she does it effortlessly, because that’s who she is. A mother of five, a wife, a conservative, a person who has lived life and succeeded at everything she has set out to do. That’s what America is.Unlike Hillary, Gov. Palin has never had the need to ‘reinvent’ herself. Unlike Obama, her message comes from the heart instead of the teleprompter. Unlike McCain, she is not a career politician. She has a life, and politics is a part of it. Kinda like the citizen legislators our founding fathers favored.
Update 5: The biggest thing going on with the lefty nutroots is their claim that Palin didn’t really deliver her Down Syndrome child, but that her daughter did. This leads to amazing comment threads filled with profanity, awful grammar and escalating paranoia about her “hypocrisy” and such.
As irritating as people like that are, I view it is a major positive that the Daily Kos-type sites are focusing on something like that. I mean, that’s the best they’ve got? Yeah, the whole state of Alaska is involved in the cover-up. Shhhhhhh. They even got a blogger to plant the “fake” story of her pregnancy back in April about a March encounter, because they anticipated all this. Actually, the blogger’s insights are fascinating because they occured so long ago. They highlight what a truly amazing and down to earth person Palin is. I think the more people learn about her the more they’ll like her.
Of course I had to check out the “Hottest Governor in the US” and quickly turned to see her pregnant (she has since had her baby) with bags and daughter in tote. Then it struck me as odd. Why is the Governor of Alaska in the airport and preparing to get onto my commercial flight?
Sarah’s got a gun – “You’re hitting it pretty close to dead center.”
Sarah on energy policies – can’t wait to see her debate Biden on this topic.
Update 4: The mainstream media was able to find some people critical of McCain’s choice of Palin. The people quoted – and I am not making this up – were Democratic politicians.
MSNBC couldn’t find any of the three (heh) people in Alaska to say anything bad about her. Seriously, I was surprised that they were so gracious in reporting about her.
Even if Palin just gets a fraction of ticked off Hillary supporters and causes a few of them to stay home that will be a big win. She has obviously and immediately energized many true conservatives who had planned to sit out. The hard core pro-abortion types were going to vote for Obama no matter what. I am continuously amused at the sexist comments made by liberals while the conseratives are focusing on her actual viewpoints. It is always nice when the truth comes out.
So the only question is whether Palin hurts McCain with the undecided folks. I don’t think it does, but it will be interesting to see what the polls show. Like McCain and unlike Obama/Biden, she has done real, live reforming, and that should appeal to the middle ground folks.
Nice summary of Obama’s experience vs. Palin’s - and remember, this is the #1 on the Dem ticket vs. the #2 on the Republican ticket.
Update 3: It is interesting that the main folks commenting on her looks are the Democrats. All the conservative bloggers I’ve read are excited about her views and her experience. Who’s sexist again? Oh yeah, anyone who votes against a woman, right?
So in this election you get to vote between being a racist or a sexist. Actually, as usual, I couldn’t care less about the skin color or gender. I care about their positions and leadership abilities. I dislike Obama because he is awful from virtually every angle – no executive experience (less than Palin), no foreign policy experience (less than Palin!) and terrible ideas on Iraq, truly monstrous pro-abortion views (to the left of NARAL!), pro-oxymoronic same-sex marriage, bad economic ideas, no loyalty (he threw his grandmother and his preacher under the bus), and so much more.
Update 2: Early conservative sentiments are interesting. The media tried to act like some are disappointed because of the “experience” issue. A Time editorial online tried to make it sound her her experience is an issue (“a heartbeat away from the presidency”). But that is simply laughable when you realize Obama would be the President from day one and that he has even less experience.
And once they dig into the details the media should realize that she has more foreign relations experience than Obama and she is in charge of the Alaska National Guard.
Every blog I’ve read has been elated – mainly like, My shift from protest vote to “Can I have a yard sign?” The fact that she is an authentic conservative seems to be getting people jazzed up. Dobson did a quick turnabout on McCain already.
And McCain’s donations page is said to be running slowly.
I didn’t sense anyone thinking, “Oh no, Obama picked Biden, now he’ll be tougher to beat.” But the pro-aborts seem mighty spun up over Palin.
Update: Be sure to watch her speech. Great stuff.
Initial reports are that Obama’s camp is attacking her lack of experience. Sure. Go strap the polygraphs and see the truth. This is the worst possible pick for them.
Obama – the “change” guy – in his first big decision as a candidate, picks Biden, a Washington insider. Not Hillary or any other woman. Not a person with executive experience. McCain picks a woman who is roughly Obama’s age.
Who’s really for change?
Obama, who has no executive experience, and who has spent most of his short time in the Senate running for President, is making a mistake in criticizing the VP pick for not having enough experience.
And true conservatives will love Palin. Check out her views and her voting record. Truly pro-life, including keeping her child with Down Syndrome when many would have aborted. She has done real, live government reform. She told the Federal Gov’t to skip the “bridge to nowhere.” She sold the governor’s jet that a Republican had purchased.
The only downside is that she and her husband are in unions, and I’m not a big union fan. But on the flip side, that could be good politics. Biden and Obama can claim to be pro-union, while she can say how her family belongs to one.

The original: Read about it here. That sound you heard was the momentum leaking out of Obama’s convention bump.
I’ve noted this on other blogs but I don’t think I mentioned it here. She was my #1 preference and I was just praying yesterday that this would happen.
Republican John McCain picked Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate on Friday, a senior campaign official said, in a surprise choice that could help him appeal to women voters.
Palin is a conservative first-term governor of Alaska with strong anti-abortion views and a record of fiscal conservatism. She is an avid sportswoman who would bring youth and vitality to the ticket. McCain turns 72 on Friday.
Palin is not well-known nationally, and that could cut into McCain’s argument that Obama is too inexperienced to handle the White House. But she could help him appeal to disaffected supporters of Democrat Hillary Clinton, who lost a bruising primary to Obama.
In his acceptance speech on Thursday, Obama directly attacked McCain and linked him to what he called the failed Republican economic policies of President George W. Bush.
Palin, former mayor of the town of Wasilla, built a reputation as a reformer in a state that recently has been hit with corruption scandals. Elected in 2006, she is Alaska’s first woman governor.
Palin and her husband, Todd, have five children, ranging in age from 18 years to 4 months.
She is very strongly pro-life, has executive experience, knows the energy issues well, and seems to be very energetic.
I can’t wait to see how the Hillary backers react. Did they really want a woman, or did they want a pro-abortion woman?
Time will tell if this was a good pick politically, but I couldn’t be happier. I think she was the best choice – way better than Huckabee, who many evangelicals seemed to lean towards.
Now who’s for change? Barack picks a male Senate lifer. McCain picks a woman. A woman who has more executive experience than Obama, in case anyone cares about that sort of thing.
I hope McCain wins a term or two followed by a couple terms of President Palin.

let’s seriously pray for her.
Is there a Biblical gender role issue with having a woman leader (or potential leader in this case) of our government? Obviously God installs whom He will as our leaders. But in a democratic society where we as believers have some level of opportunity to express support for their leaders, should gender be an issue of consideration?
Also, please understand my question is not about what the laws or policies of the land should be (it should be obvious that all races, genders, religions and other persuasions should be allowed to hold office if elected). This is trying to assess how Christians should view the elections through a Biblical lens and how that should impact how they exercise their opportunity to vote.
As a liberal supporter of Obama I am also absolutely thrilled about McCain’s choice today. He completely neutered his argument with Obama over experience. He has now chosen a woman that has less than two years of state government experience (and was the mayor of a town of 9,000 before that) in a state that has about the same population of Sacramento, CA. As he celebrates his 72nd birthday today, many are going to wonder whether he’ll survive the next four years so the issue of his VP choice is critical.
He also deeply offended conservative women by passing over far more qualified and experienced female Republicans by this choice.
Again, EXCELLENT choice!!
I LOVE THE CHOICE. I love that she is a mom of 5 (talk about administration experience!) and that she even has a baby. I didn’t see this coming but I was longing for a surprise choice. I like huckabee, but this was the right move for McCain to make!
Sure, Joanne. Go strap the polygraphs on Obama’s camp and see the truth. This is the worst possible pick for them.
Obama – the “change” guy – in his first big decision as a candidate, picks re-tread Biden. McCain picks a woman.
Who’s really for change?
Obama, who has no executive experience, and who has spent his 4 years in the Senate running for President, is making a huge mistake in criticizing the VP pick for not having enough experience.
Does Obama really want to bring up the experience thing?
And true conservatives will love her. Check out her views and her voting record.
Keep telling yourself it was a bad choice for McCain.
Yeah, this is awesome news, and sure to throw a wrench into the supposed “unity” between the Obama folks and disgruntled Hillary supporters. I feel good about this election for the first time in ages!
I’m slowly getting sold on her. The more I learn about her the more excited about this race I’m becoming.
Heck, I think she’d make a better president then McCain, so I’m already looking forward to the next 8 years! (4 if McCain loses).
Her uncle says today “She lives her life by the Bible. You can’t go wrong with that.” If she gets elected and McCain dies, at least she will have Jesus Christ to guide her. Praise the Lord.
I think the Dems are scared. If they are attacking her on her supposed lack of experience, they are stupid too. She has more executive experience than their candidate… she is just the VP. Not a very wise attack
This surprise pick is brilliant! The more I learn about her the better I like her!
It sure shows up Obama for not selecting Hillary as his VP running mate. I’m sure he was advised (by many in the Dem party) to select Clinton, but his arrogance got in the way and his obvious personal dislike for her would not allow him to do so.
I’m happy!
“She has more executive experience than their candidate… she is just the VP.”
That’s great logic. She also has more executive experience than McCain. Maybe he should step aside and let this more qualified candidate take the top spot.
“Maybe he should step aside and let this more qualified candidate take the top spot.”
Hi Joanne – good point – you may be on to something there!
Seriously, I think the experience conversation goes like this:
Obama camp: Your #2 doesn’t have enough experience, and you may die soon!
McCain camp: She still has more experience than your #1, and I’m in good health and will probably be around long enough for her to get even more.
OC: But you are the one who made the big deal about experience.
MC: Yes, but McCain has tons of it and Obama does not. And she has executive experience, whereas your guys just have legislative. Oh, yes, and Obama’s done virtually nothing since he’s been a Senator except campaign for President, so how much does that experience count? She actually has a track record for accomplishing things.
Neil,
Yep. I think it was a good choice IF FOR NO OTHER REASON than she can woo disenchanted Hillary supporters who didn’t want to vote for Obama.
I think it is a coup.
“Is there a Biblical gender role issue with having a woman leader (or potential leader in this case) of our government?”
Hi mjtilley,
I’m not aware of anything in the Bible that would be against this. Deborah was a great judge in Israel, for example. And any descriptions of gender roles in the Bbile relate to family and the church.
There is plenty in the Bible about not murdering people, so the fact that she is strongly pro-life is a huge plus.
” . . . in a state that has about the same population of Sacramento, CA.”
Does the largest state in terms of physical size have a relatively small population? Sure.
It is just slightly smaller than the state the Dem VP is a Senator of. Hmmmm . . . and doesn’t each state have two Senators? And don’t Governors actually run things? Seems to me that if size becomes an issue that Palin has more direct influence than Biden.
I’m sorry, that’s a non-sequitor. Of course, the governor of Alaska has more direct influence on Alaskan politics. And a senator from any state (since each have 2) has more direct influence on federal legislation. The legislation that Biden has written over the last 30 years affects ALL Americans, not just the 700,000 that live in Alaska.
Try this math then: She has direct control over 700,000 people. Biden has indirect control along with 500 other congressmen and a President over a few hundred million.
Regardless of how you slice it, the “she runs a small state” charge means little. Can you picture a pro-lifer saying, “Well, her state was kinda small population-wise, so I’ll vote for the guy who is for partial-brith abortion and against the Born Alive Infant Protection Act.”
I’m pretty happy with his choice, myself.
Somebody is gettin’ fooooooled.
neil,
i like her too.
i am just a bit concerned about the rumored windfall profits tax she helped levy against the oil companies in AK. she apparently gave each AK citizen $1200 to offset heating cost. this is a bit of wealth re-distribution, which i am against. her husband is also a life union member and that has certain issues associated with it. (the reason it is rumored is that i have only read it on various blogs but not in actual print.)
However, i do like the fact that she is not a Washington insider. we need new blood. we need someone that still sees things like we do, the actual people out here. we need someone that truly wants to stop pork barrel spending and wasteful spending. it is rampant on both sides of the isle.
with that being said, her stance on life brings me the greatest joy. i am one of those people that before today, i was going to vote against obama in the fall.. now i am voting for mccain/palin
kw
Re, “Did they (Hillary supporters) really want a woman, or did they want a pro-abortion woman?”
They wanted a liberal Democratic woman. Palin ain’t that. I agree with James “Snakehead” Carville: Maybe 18 of the “18 million cracks” Hillary left in the glass ceiling will go over to the GOP.
Truly a great roll of the dice on McCain’s part. He just re-evened the field.
NOW is said to be unhappy with the choice. Personally, I doubt this will win over Hillary supporters since she is a conservative prolifer against two feminist leaning males. Can’t say that I care about having a woman as vp either.
I also think that she is going to have a tough time while debating Biden. In fact, I suspect that she will have a tough time in the election process period. The attack dogs have already been released. If she shows any type of strength a la Hillary Clinton, then she’s fit for the job.
Lastly, I believed Obama “lost” the election when it was confirmed that Clinton would not be VP. But McCain’s pick left me with the feeling that the dems still have a chance.
For some reason Obama actually said this about McCain’s pick: “More of the same.”
No, that would be YOUR VP pick Obama! I think we now know who “doesn’t get it.” This election is about getting rid of corruption. It’s about character. It’s about standing on principle.
I, for one, am sick and tired of listening to Obama try and explain away all the skeletons in his closet and watching him avoid straight answers to tough, important-issue questions and flip-flopping and watching the pandering the closer he got to the nomination.
Sarah Palin was an excellent choice, and McCain once again reaffirms his maverick credentials and has just energized the Republican base. (My wallet is a little lighter this evening with a new yard sign and all.)
I will be voting McCain/Palin
Jay has my amen.
I pray this is the beginning of the end of the Temple of Obama cult.
I feel like a brand new, conservative independent!
They are saying this morning that McCain has received 3 million in donations following the announcement. I think people are looking at the experience issue and deciding what counts is if the experience reflects your stated values.
I believe that Sarah Palin does exactly that. I have a good feeling about her.
I stole the following from a commenter at SisterToldjah’s blog. It supports the notion that Hillary supporters could jump ship a lot more than I had thought previously.
————————————————————————–
Checked some of the initial reactions over at the Hillary Clinton forum. If this reaction spreads, it’s probably lights-out for He Whose Middle Name Must Not Be Mentioned.
A sampling:
HOPE ITS PALIN, I WOULD VOTE TWICE JUST TO STICK IT TO OBAMA
…
They brushed off the women base like dirt. and the GOP pick them up. Go McCain.
…
Buuuuurn Obama Buuuurn! What a slap in the face.
If it’s Palin, I will put blood and sweat into campaigning for that team.
…
If this is true, this moves me from staying at home to voting McCain.
…
I am THRILLED! AS for the Dums whining that she doens’t have experience running things–SHE HAS FIVE KIDS!! TRUST ME! SHE KNOWS HOW TO RUN THINGS!
…
That’s it for me. I will be voting McCain/Palin, a Republican team, for the very first time in my life. YEOW, how my life has changed this year.
…
This pick will help cure the heartache of HRC supporters. I know that it lifted my heart already. I’m in so much joy.
…
This will certainly lure across more than a few Hillary supporters who are OUTRAGED at how SEXIST the DNC is and how disgracefully they treated an extraordinary presidential candidate. Note: this one was from the site administrator!
I’m so thrilled, it had seemed McCain was being pulled in other directions (for the worse), but he’s made a brilliant leadership call here. Not only can my conscience now allow me to vote for McCain, but I can do it enthusiastically.
Great quotes, Marshall. I think this is pretty straightforward. Even if Palin just gets a fraction of ticked off Hillary supporters and causes a few of them to stay home that will be a big win.
Palin has obviously and immediately energized many true conservatives who had planned to sit out.
The hard core pro-abortion types were going to vote for Obama no matter what.
So the only question is whether Palin hurts McCain with the undecideds. I don’t think it does. She has done real, live reforming, unlike the Dems.
Experience is not all about years in office. During her two years as Alaska’s Governor, Palin has done quite a bit for the state: eliminating the $400 “bridge to nowhere,” whipping out her line-item veto pen, and working on energy interests. Oh, did I mention leading the Alaskan National Guard?
Obama, despite having the opportunity (as does every other sitting Senator) to put his name on signature, nation-changing legislation, has done nothing in the Senate except for casting a few votes and writing autobiographies. Any of the people here could do the same and be no more experienced for it, much as people can attend college for four years but learn nothing due to time spent drinking and partying.
Go Palin!
As you know from my blog I am ecstatic about Palin and everyone I know is now energized in a way that would never have happened if he had picked anyone else. If he had picked Huckabee, I’m not even sure I could’ve voted for him. I don’t want that man anywhere near the White House.
I also heard today that the McCain camp has raised $10 million in the 4 days that she’s been on the ticket. Like McCain said on Fox News Sunday, had he known he would’ve put her on the ticket earlier.
I think Biden was a horrible pick for so many reasons. Obama needed to pick a Governor, not the #3 most liberal senator. I think Bayh, Richardson or Sebelius would’ve been much better choices but Biden works because it makes it just that much better for our side.
[...] Neil woo-hoos the Palin pick – and gives us roughly 10,000 updates. [...]
