Saved from what?

question-mark.gifChristians use words like Savior and saved rather reflexively.  Just pay attention to the next few songs you hear in church or on Christian radio and you’ll see what I mean.

But it seems that we rarely complete the sentence.  Do we assume that everyone knows?  Have we forgotten?  Do we really believe it?

Saviors save people from something.  Redeemers redeem people from something.  Deliverers deliver people from something.

But what is it?  What are Christians saved from?

They are saved from the wrath of God and a well deserved eternity in Hell.

Luke 19:10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.”

Jude 23 snatch others from the fire and save them; to others show mercy, mixed with fear—hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh.

Romans 5:9 Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him!

Titus 3:5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,

  1. The wrath of the Big G is a serious thing! lol, but serious, I think that we are saved from the consequences of our sinful actions.

  2. Hi Neil,
This IS a major problem in the church because many think that all Jesus does is save us, deliver us from our current set of problems. He’s just there to deliver me from my problems so that I can be happy again. This is so wrong. In fact, more often than not, He has ordained your problems for you, because we grow more through suffering than we do through pleasure and happiness.

His purpose is to save us from the wrath of God, but also to sanctify us. Gold is always much finer after going through the boiling pot. Same is true for His own private possession!

BTW, I came through surgery just fine. Only problem was keeping down my lunch afterwards. I’m also sleeping a lot. Both the pain killers and stomach medicine have made me drowsy. I should be up and around by Monday.

  3. I was in a theater once when a man approached me and, Indicating the seat next to me, said, “Is this seat saved?”

I said, “Well, inasmuch as Aquinas reasoned that even animals don’t have souls, and thus cannot be saved, how much less chance does an inanimate object such as a theater seat have of attaining salvation?”

I could have said, “No, but it’s under conviction,” but I didn’t.

  4. Mark,
Let me guess. He just looked at you with a blank stare. LOL. :)
