It was with great sadness that I learned that a theologically liberal blogger was going to spend many, many thousands of dollars and countless hours going to some form of seminary. I grieve for him and how he will spread his false teachings to a broader audience and I grieve for those he will mislead. What a waste.
Satan has such incredible power (though fortunately God has much more). What else could cause someone to spend to much time and money to “learn” more about how to tell people that you can’t know the truth about God? This guy is so convinced that we can’t know much about God — “through a glass darkly” and all that. Yet he “knows” that orthodox believers are wrong about the Bible. And he is quite certain that it’s bad to oppose anti-Biblical and oxymoronic “same sex marriage.” He knows the Bible isn’t all inspired, but that some of it is. He’ll be glad to tell you which parts. Oddly, the parts he agrees with conform remarkably to the views of the world. Go figure.
My guess is that he isn’t so direct with his universalism (“everybody’s going to Heaven!”) and anti-Bible messages when they hand him the microphone in church.
These people have such transparently false beliefs. If they really believed in universalism they’d send reverse missionaries to de-convert people from Christianity. After all, if everyone is going to Heaven anyway, why suffer as a Christian in India, Kora, Cambodia, Iran and so many other countries hostile to the Gospel?
Who would have thought that the most God-honoring thing this guy could do was to not go to seminary? I pray that one day he’ll read the Bible with open eyes and he’ll learn the truth.
It just goes to show how truly messed up Christianity has become in the U.S. that so many people can call themselves Christians, mock the word and the cross and not even realize their heresies.
Screwtape lives.
2 Corinthians 11:13-15 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.
