Another global warming lie: Climate chief was told of false glacier claims before Copenhagen.   But just because these guys have been caught in amazing, fantastically expensive lies that they personally profited from doesn’t mean you can’t trust them, right?

Question: Would every Liberal-controlled school system be better if a hurricane hit it?  Answer: Probably.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan, one of the Chicagoans brought to Washington for “The Golden Age of Hope and Change” (aka, “The Unmitigated Disaster of Unprecedented Proportions”), said recently that “the best thing to ever happen to the school system in New Orleans was Hurricane Katrina”.

He’s right.

New Orleans public schools were terrible before Katrina.  Post-disaster, they were rebuilt from the ground up, along a charter school model that’s already showing great progress.

I’m actually glad to see NOW — the National Organization of (un-aborted) Women — protesting Tim Tebow’s Super Bowl Commercial, as it will draw more attention to it.

So, the point is that people who think Roe vs. Wade should be overturned lose their right to free speech? Does this principle apply to all Supreme Court decisions? If so, I guess we’d better get started on the Obama impeachment hearings, after the embarrassing disrespect he showed the Supreme Court during the State of the Union address.

. . .

It’s nostalgic to read a press release from NOW again. The organization was last seen sinking into the bubbling tar of the Clinton impeachment saga, babbling incomprehensibly about how sexual harassment really isn’t such a big deal when pro-abortion Democrat presidents do it.

. . .

The Tebows are not planning to use their Super Bowl minutes for a sermon, or to impose their views on anyone. They only want their chance to testify that life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are not an equation that balances out to zero.

Homophobia is the “irrational fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexuality or homosexuals.”  It applies to a remarkably small number of people, none of whom I have ever met.  It is a petty, childish putdown used by those who try to silence others who dare to criticize anything about homosexual behavior.  These people can’t argue an issue on its merits so they resort to personal attacks.

Sadly, the attacks are often effective.   Immoral and illogical, but effective.  What many people do suffer from is the rational fear that they will be called a homophobe.  Because of that, they don’t dare to share the truth of God’s word or to oppose things like teaching 5 year olds how “normal” homosexual behavior is.

What do Obama & Co. want more than healthcare for the uninsured?

More abortions.  Seriously.

Meditate on this: If Obama, Pelosi, Reid and the rest hadn’t insisted on taxpayer funded abortions – despite their repeated lies in saying that wasn’t part of their plan - the health care bill would have sailed through Congress long ago.  Their desire to increase abortions resulted in them not only missing out on that but in killing socialized healthcare for many years.

If they hadn’t insisted on taxpayer funded abortions they could have have passed the rest of the health care bill and saved hundreds of millions in dollars in bribes to Louisana, Nebraska and other states.  But that wouldn’t have increased abortions, so they would rather have no bill at all.

None of the health care amendments would have reduced the current level of abortions.  They just sought to ensure that it wouldn’t have provided for taxpayer-funded abortions, which the vast majority of Americans oppose.  Even if abortions are legal it doesn’t mean we should be forced to pay poorer people to have their unborn children destroyed.

Fact: These leaders wanted to increase abortions more than they want to help the uninsured.   They would rather destroy the potentially poor than help the real poor (as misguided and counterproductive as their plans are).

Isn’t it a bizarre but positive thing that their irrational passion for more abortions not only kept them from gaining that but kept the rest of the health care debacle from being passed?

P.S. Repeat after me — abortion is not health care.  Health care is when you help human beings live.

Good post by Pastor Timothy on the King James Version-only controversy.  I like Greg Koukl’s line about always recommending the KVJ to everyone who is over 350 years old.  I have no objections to anyone using the KJV, but it isn’t for me. I like the ESV and the NIV but I’m not a snob about them.

This is just sad — he uses a teleprompter for a room this small?!

Republicans do have a plan for health care reform. They need to add tort reform to the list.  Defensive medicine and malpractice insurance are huge drains on productivity and costs.

If Obama and the Democrats really want to “fight” Wall Street greed, they could have just not bailed them out multiple times beginning with the Clinton years.  Oh, and they could do something about Freddie and Fannie.  There is no way the financial crisis would have happened without the ineptitude and greed of those organizations.

Tragic: Single mother of four (five, actually) dies from “safe and legal” abortion – Apparently front alley abortions can be dangerous, too.  Oh, and the unborn child is also dead.

Oops — Behar Accidentally Outs Gays, Says Monogamy Is ‘Too Much Trouble’ – Is she homophobic?  Isn’t that the term we use for anyone who criticizes anything about the gay lobby?

One of my favorite blogs . . .

. . . is Hillbuzz, written by a bunch of gay guys in Chicago.  You might be thinking my blog has been hijacked, but never fear.   Do I disagree with them on some matters about human sexuality and God?  Well, duh.  But we have a lot in common and it is good to read different perspectives, and these guys have a lot of important things to say.  And they are funny and much more charitable to Christianity than you’d expect.  I’d trust them way more than theological Liberals whose religion is just Lefty politics in disguise.

Oh, and they are being viciously attacked and threatened by extremists on the Left because they dare to criticize President Obama.  Please pray for their safety, as I do.

Consider this post and a few excerpts below.  Very insightful.

Question: Who will be left to help Haiti once all the Liberals get back to thinking about Oscar season?

We’re just going to answer this question right now:  Christians.

Christians will be in Haiti helping rebuild that country, working in deplorable conditions, and, frankly, giving every last bit of themselves to rebuild Port-au-Prince and relieve as much suffering as possible.

George Clooney will take his beard back to Italy, or wherever he goes with it (or her, depending on how you want to define that), on his private jet, probably snacking on roast peacock and baby seal, all the while lambasting the rest of the masses for their carbon footprints and general thoughtlessness.

. . .

Liberals don’t build things.  They don’t get their hands dirty.  They just attack people, call them RAAACISTS! when they don’t agree with the Liberal talking points, and then get back into their limousines to ride twelve feet to the red carpet.

More and more we think about the difference between the way we are personally treated by the Left and the Right.  To be blunt, neither extreme likes gays all that much.  Liberals are smart enough to put on a good face about it in public, but behind closed doors they make their jokes, too, and can be far crueler than you could ever imagine.  The Right’s foolish because — and we honestly believe this — conservatives are less prejudiced, reactionary, and hateful than Liberals…but they just don’t know how to do good PR.  Maybe it’s because conservatives are largely quiet, on the whole, and tend to mind their own business…so the random zealots who condemn people like us to fire and brimstone and eternal suffering (what, like having to watch MSNBC?) get more airplay.

As we’ve said before, about the worst thing a Republican ever did to us was tell us they were going to pray for us “to get better”, so we would suddenly one day wake up and be all about Ann Hathaway, and not focused on how last-season her Oscar dress is.

. . .

Remind us why Liberals are so much better than Republicans again, for gays, or for anything else.  While you’re at it, please explain why Christians are so persecuted by the media, and so maligned day in and day out…and yet these people jump into the fray when people need help.

While Liberals wait in the limousine for the best lighting to step out, for their photo op, to tell the cameras how sad they are about things like Haiti.

And how it’s all Bush’s fault.

Wow, gotta love those guys.  Uh, in a totally manly, agape way, of course. Seriously, I’m glad they’ve had some positive interactions with authentic Christians.  I know the media and the Left are relentless with their pathetic-but-effective “homophobe” pejoratives, but the Christians I know (and I know a couple) interact with GLBT folks in the same way described above.

Galatians 6

Greetings!

Galatians 6 Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted. Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

It is so easy to compare ourselves with others.  This leads to the bad kind of pride, where we compare our strengths to the weaknesses of others, or the bad kind of humility, where we compare our weaknesses to the strengths of others.

If anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself. Each one should test his own actions. Then he can take pride in himself, without comparing himself to somebody else, for each one should carry his own load.

Anyone who receives instruction in the word must share all good things with his instructor.

The next passage should be a warning to those who mock God and his Word.  Yes, forgiveness is possible (thank God!) but that doesn’t mean we won’t still have to live with the consequences of our sins.

Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.

It is tiring to do good, but Paul exhorts us to stay the course because we’ll be glad we did later.  We can trust that it will all be worthwhile.

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

Paul had some kind of problem with his eyes.

See what large letters I use as I write to you with my own hand!

Those who want to make a good impression outwardly are trying to compel you to be circumcised. The only reason they do this is to avoid being persecuted for the cross of Christ. Not even those who are circumcised obey the law, yet they want you to be circumcised that they may boast about your flesh. May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is a new creation. Peace and mercy to all who follow this rule, even to the Israel of God.

Make no mistake: Paul suffered greatly for the Gospel.  Read 2 Corinthians 11:22-33.  He was beaten, whipped, jailed and more many times.

Finally, let no one cause me trouble, for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers. Amen.

STUNNING ADMISSION: UK scientists admit they make up data for political reasons to support Church of Global Warming

This story is getting absolutely no coverage here in the US, but it’s stunning to us.

UK scientists are actually admitting they make up data to promote the Church of Global Warming, because they “want to put political pressure on governments”.  So, these people invent data, such as the reports on Himalayan glacier shrinkage, create a global hysteria, dupe the Nobel Prize Committee into handing out a meritless award for research that is fabricated and fatally flawed, and the US media deigns not to report any of it.

The Nobel Prize, at this juncture, has essentially become no more prestigious than something found at the bottom of a Cracker Jacks box.

And not even one of the good prizes, like the fake tattoos or a decoder ring.

Tim Tebow already catching flak from pro-aborts regarding his Super Bowl ad.  Good for him.  This will cost him much in the way of endorsements, but he is making a case for life and his faith in a very public way.  How ironic that pro-aborts insist on the choice to kill innocent human beings but can’t live with the choice not to watch a commercial they don’t like.  Oh, the humanity!

And note the silence of NOW and other “feminist” groups on all the other commercials that objectify women.

Bizarro world and illegal feticide: Lady charged with crime for deliberately falling downstairs to end her pregnancy, while an abortion would have been completely legal.

Quote of the week by Mark Steyn that highlights just how in denial the Democrats are.   Good news for Conservatives, I suppose.  (Hat tip: Wintery Knight)

In that interview about how he hadn’t given enough interviews, he also explained to George Stephanopoulos what that wacky Massachusetts election was all about:“The same thing that swept Scott Brown into office swept me into office,” said Obama. “People are angry and they’re frustrated, not just because of what’s happened in the last year or two years but what’s happened over the last eight years.”

Got it. People are so angry and frustrated at George W. Bush that they’re voting for Republicans. In Massachusetts.

Great witness by Drew Brees – Go Saints!

A stupid thing to say? Yes, but not as stupid as . . .

The Lt. Governor of South Carolina, Andre Bauer, was foolish to equate feeding poor people with the breeding of animals, but several things should be noted.

1. It is nowhere near as awful and perverse as it is for pro-abortion advocates to promote abortion as a solution to having less poor people (Uh, yeah, I suppose if you crush and dismember human beings they won’t be poor.  They’ll be dead.  It works inside of the womb and outside.  It is just grossly immoral.).  It is morbidly ironic to see fake Christian pro-aborts use the words of Jesus to grandstand against Bauer.  They are always so generous with other people’s money, but rarely with their own, and always willing to let innocent human beings die if they are in someone’s way.

2. He sounds very tame compared to Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood.  Anyone criticizing him is also attacking the founding principles of PP.  They have been very successful in destroying black people, killing more in a day than the KKK has in their existence.  The black abortion rate is 3x that of whites.  That doesn’t bother some people.

Eugenic sterilization is an urgent need … We must prevent multiplication of this bad stock.

Instead of decreasing and aiming to eliminate the stocks that are most detrimental to the future of the race and the world, it tends to render them to a menacing degree dominant … We are paying for, and even submitting to, the dictates of an ever-increasing, unceasingly spawning class of human beings who never should have been born at all.

3. The most shrill critics of Bauer will be the ones who are skilled at giving away other people’s money and calling it charity on their part.

4. No one wants kids to go hungry, but the school breakfast and lunch programs are just an encroachment of the nanny state to convince parents that they aren’t really responsible for feeding their kids.  Food stamps can pay for breakfast and lunch, right?  If parents don’t feed their kids then hold the parents accountable.  But you don’t have to have the state provide all their meals.

These Liberals just make problems worse in their never ending quest for utopia, even if it involves legal destruction of innocent human beings to ensure ”sexual freedom.”  News flash: If you want utopia, then repent & believe and you’ll eventually find it.  But don’t think it will happen in this life.  Use some logic to anticipate the logical consequences of government actions.

Galatians 5

Greetings!

Galatians 5 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

Mark my words! I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no value to you at all. Again I declare to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obligated to obey the whole law. You who are trying to be justified by law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace. But by faith we eagerly await through the Spirit the righteousness for which we hope. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.

Keep in mind that Paul isn’t just talking about circumcision.  The real issue is turning back to works-righteousness, whereby we think that by doing certain things (like circumcision, in the case of first century Jews) that we are able to reconcile ourselves to God and to please him.

And by trying to justify yourself by obeying one law you have put yourself back under the whole law.  That is bad news.

You were running a good race. Who cut in on you and kept you from obeying the truth? That kind of persuasion does not come from the one who calls you. “A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough.” I am confident in the Lord that you will take no other view. The one who is throwing you into confusion will pay the penalty, whoever he may be. Brothers, if I am still preaching circumcision, why am I still being persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been abolished. As for those agitators, I wish they would go the whole way and emasculate themselves!

Paul is so frustrated with the circumcision group that he wishes they would go ahead and castrate themselves.  Ouch!

You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love. The entire law is summed up in a single command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” If you keep on biting and devouring each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.

Once we have our freedom, what do we do with it?  Choosing to worry and sin is such a natural thing for us, but we now have the power to choose to serve others in love.

So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law.

The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Note that some of those sins are very visible, but some are not quite as transparent.  People may not be able to see our selfish ambition, jealousy and envy, but they can still hurt us and others.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

The fruit of the spirit can’t be obtained on our own.  We must have the Holy Spirit in us to have these traits of Christ.

Galatians 4

Greetings!

Galatians 4 What I am saying is that as long as the heir is a child, he is no different from a slave, although he owns the whole estate. He is subject to guardians and trustees until the time set by his father. So also, when we were children, we were in slavery under the basic principles of the world. But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons. Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir.

There is a strong theme of adoption in the Bible.  Christians weren’t natural children of God but we were adopted into his family as sons and daughters.  John 1:12 says, “Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.”  And we weren’t just adopted into any family, we were adopted into God’s family, and we have been given full rights.

Note how it says above that the “When the time had fully come . . .”  God waited until there was a common language through most of the world (Greek), there was relative peace in the world, and accessibility via roads was at an all time high.  Then He brought his Son into the world.

Abba is the Aramaic word used by children to address their fathers, so it is a term of familiarity and endearment such as “Daddy.”  That we can talk to God so intimately is one of the radical concepts of Christianity, as most religions view God as unapproachable or unknowable in this way.

Formerly, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those who by nature are not gods. But now that you know God—or rather are known by God—how is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable principles? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again? You are observing special days and months and seasons and years! I fear for you, that somehow I have wasted my efforts on you.

Everyone is a slave to someone or something.  Ironically, becoming a child of God liberates you from slavery to Satan and the world.  Most people don’t realize they are slaves in that sense, but we all serve someone.  The Galatians were going back to religious rituals instead of embracing their freedom in Christ.

I plead with you, brothers, become like me, for I became like you. You have done me no wrong. As you know, it was because of an illness that I first preached the gospel to you. Even though my illness was a trial to you, you did not treat me with contempt or scorn. Instead, you welcomed me as if I were an angel of God, as if I were Christ Jesus himself. What has happened to all your joy? I can testify that, if you could have done so, you would have torn out your eyes and given them to me. Have I now become your enemy by telling you the truth?

In our politically correct culture, people often view the truth as offensive.  But if we really love people we’ll speak the truth to them with grace and humility.

It is easy to let worldly things rob us of the joy that is our birthright in being Christians.  Today is a great day to recapture that joy!

Those people are zealous to win you over, but for no good. What they want is to alienate you from us, so that you may be zealous for them. It is fine to be zealous, provided the purpose is good, and to be so always and not just when I am with you. My dear children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you, how I wish I could be with you now and change my tone, because I am perplexed about you!

Here’s a post about zeal.  Some people think it is bad to be zealous, but as Paul points out, it can be a good thing.

Tell me, you who want to be under the law, are you not aware of what the law says? For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman and the other by the free woman. His son by the slave woman was born in the ordinary way; but his son by the free woman was born as the result of a promise.

In this section Paul takes the story of Abraham and Sarah (from Genesis chapters 12-25) and the birth of Abraham’s sons as an allegory for believers and non-believers.  Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness, and God promised him a son.  Christians are children of the promise.  By God’s grace we are children of the free woman and heirs of God.

These things may be taken figuratively, for the women represent two covenants. One covenant is from Mount Sinai and bears children who are to be slaves: This is Hagar. Now Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present city of Jerusalem, because she is in slavery with her children. But the Jerusalem that is above is free, and she is our mother. For it is written: “Be glad, O barren woman, who bears no children; break forth and cry aloud, you who have no labor pains; because more are the children of the desolate woman than of her who has a husband.”

Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise. At that time the son born in the ordinary way persecuted the son born by the power of the Spirit. It is the same now. But what does the Scripture say? “Get rid of the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with the free woman’s son.” Therefore, brothers, we are not children of the slave woman, but of the free woman.

Exodus 21 and abortion

Pro-choice advocates often refer to a passage in Exodus 21 to support their views.

When men strive together and hit a pregnant woman, so that her children come out, but there is no harm, the one who hit her shall surely be fined, as the woman’s husband shall impose on him, and he shall pay as the judges determine. But if there is harm, then you shall pay life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe. (Exodus 21:22–25, ESV)

The short version is that the key word of the passage is often not translated well and says “miscarriage” instead of “children come out.”  It you study the original Hebrew it becomes very clear that Moses did not mean that if the child is killed that the penalty is less severe.  I highly recommend the following resources as thorough and accurate rebuttals to the pro-choice claims: What Exodus 21 says about abortion by Greg Koukl and The Misuse of Exodus 21:22-25 by Pro-Choice Advocates by John Piper.

But that is just one of many problems with their use of this passage.  Here is a full list:

1. They get the text wrong.  This is a pro-life passage, not a pro-legalized abortion passage.  If Moses wanted to say “miscarriage” he could have used a much more specific word for that.

2. They ignore or rationalize away other Biblical texts that they don’t like, such as Leviticus 18:22 (ESV - You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.)  So why do they find Exodus 21 so authoritative?

They ignore passages like Romans 1 where Paul explicitly declares homosexual behavior to be sinful because they think Paul didn’t know enough about biology and psychology (and they unwittingly tip their hand that they don’t believe any scripture is truly inspired by God).  But if Paul is so ignorant and scripture is un-inspired, why trust Moses to know key scientific facts?  They should dismiss the “miscarriage” term even if it had been in the original text because he didn’t have access to the scientific fact that a new human life begins at conception.

3. They don’t even agree with the other teachings of Exodus 21, such as verses 23-25.

But if there is harm, then you shall pay life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.

They are almost exclusively anti-capital punishment.  So why do they rationalize away the destruction of over a million innocent human beings per year in the U.S. based on a poor translation of a single word and then ignore the rest of the passage which is much more clear?

4. They ignore the endless pro-life passages in the Bible.

In summary, Christians (the uninformed kind) and “Christians” (the fake kind) who use Exodus 21 as support for abortion on demand serve up a quadruple dose of FAIL.  If it weren’t for people like them Roe v Wade and the destruction that followed would not have happened.

So what have Republicans really done for the pro-life cause?

Short answer: A lot.

Some complain that electing Republicans hasn’t done much for the protection of unborn human beings. I agree that some politicians run as pro-lifers then do little or nothing about it. But I think a lot of progress happened, such as Roberts and Alito on the Supreme Court. It has been a long, slow process with many gains. We were almost there until too many pro-lifers believed the hope-and-change message and ignored his well documented pro-abortion views. We’ll probably have Sotomayar for decades instead of a justice who would have upheld the Constitution.

But there is much, much more that they have accomplished. As Roxanne from Haemet noted (I combined a couple of her comments):

Not in chronological order:
1. The Partial-Birth Abortion ban.

2. Antonin Scalia

3. Clarence Thomas

4. John Roberts

5. Sam Alito

6. The Hyde Amendment

7. The “Mexico City” rule, which prevents federal funding/overseas aid that goes to any agency that also performs abortions.

8. Laws that make it illegal to take minors across state lines for the purposes of obtaining an abortion.

9.  The Born Alive Infants Protection Act, which passed Congress by a vote of 98-0. (Barack voted against an identical bill in Illinois.)10. Foetal homicide laws (yay!)

11. Informed consent laws.

Compare to what happens when Dems are in control, in no particular chronological order:

1. An attempt to pass the “Freedom of Choice Act,” which would outlaw every single restriction on abortion ever put into place.

2. Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stevens, Breyer, Sotomayor….

3. Repeal of the Mexico City policy

4. An attempt to mandate abortion coverage via taxpayer dollars.

Just saying… things would be a lot worse if not for what conservatives have been doing.

I would add “repeal of parental consent” requirements to the Democrats’ list.

Those are a lot of very specific and important gains made solely because pro-lifers were elected.  While Scott Brown is not thoroughly pro-life, his election may have saved hundreds of thousands of lives by stopping taxpayer funding of abortions.

Abortion ends the lives of over 3,000 human beings per day in the U.S.  It is the greatest moral issue of our time and worth fighting for.

Thoughts and lessons from Scott Brown’s victory

Some random thoughts . . .

  1. It was amazing political theater and history.
  2. It has Democrats across the board very scared.
  3. Real grassroots campaigning and simple messages work.
  4. I hope the Republicans don’t blow this opportunity, but they might.  They need to advance conservative principles and stick with them and not become RINOs once elected.
  5. This lone victory may have set back the socialism of universal health care for decades, if not longer.  After HillaryCare and ObamaCare, who would touch it?
  6. I forced myself to watch Keith Olberman for the first time.  It started off as schadenfreude because I’d heard so many things about how hateful he was and I wanted to see how he would react.  But wow, he was worse than I thought he’d be.  He even got a non sequitor dig in at President Bush’s “Mission Accomplished” banner.  What a bitter, hateful person and irrational to boot.  One example: He thinks Scott Brown is a “homophobe” because he thinks it is unnatural for two women to have a baby.  Perhaps Keith’s science classes devoted too much time to evolutionary dogma and not enough to real biology, but to say that is unnatural should be obvious and non-controversial and it borders on insanity to say that someone with Brown’s view has an irrational fear of homosexuals and needs psychiatric help.
  7. I wish Brown was thoroughly pro-life, but at least he is against partial-birth abortion and pro-parental notification laws.  Perhaps he’s more pro-life than we know — after all, this is Massachusetts and he was political enough to thank Ted Kennedy for his service.  But the lesser of two evils is less evil, so I’m far happier with his abortion views than Coakley’s.  The ObamaCare plan most definitely included taxpayer funded abortions, so Brown’s election saved countless lives.
  8. The amazing irony of Ted Kennedy handing this seat to a Republican.  Make no mistake: I think Ted Kennedy was a bad man.  Killing Mary Jo Kopechne, being a scrooge with his own vast wealth yet taking credit as being a champion of the poor by giving away other people’s money, switching from pro-life to pro-abortion, opposing wind farms in his area but posing as a Green, and worst of all, his treason in the 1980′s when he let the Russians know he’d support them over Reagan (that’s for starters).  He should have been jailed long ago.  But even with all that he gamed the rules when Kerry ran for President so this type of election would be held, then he hung on too long himself when he could have easily annointed a successor.
  9. The independents have figured out what a spectacular liar they elected.  Diehard Liberals will stick with him but those who realize they were suckered will not.
  10. Will the Democrats come to their senses or believe that their problem was not being Liberal enough?

Galatians 3

Greetings!

Paul isn’t bashful or vague.  Look how he starts off the first paragraph:

Galatians 3 You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified. I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by observing the law, or by believing what you heard? Are you so foolish? After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort? Have you suffered so much for nothing—if it really was for nothing? Does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you because you observe the law, or because you believe what you heard?

He gets right to the heart of the Gospel: We are saved by belief in Christ, but we can foolishly then try to earn what we have already been given.  It is as if we have been granted free access into Heaven, but we sneak out then try to work our way back in.

We should look different and continually get “better” as God sanctifies us (purifies us).  But that can sometimes fool us into the false belief that we deserve salvation or can earn it ourselves.

Consider Abraham: “He believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” Understand, then, that those who believe are children of Abraham. The Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.” So those who have faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.

If we try to live by the law, we have to uphold every bit of it.  This is simply impossible.  If you look closely at the 10 Commandments it is hard to go 10 minutes without sinning.

All who rely on observing the law are under a curse, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.” Clearly no one is justified before God by the law, because, “The righteous will live by faith.” The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, “The man who does these things will live by them.” Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.” He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.

Brothers, let me take an example from everyday life. Just as no one can set aside or add to a human covenant that has been duly established, so it is in this case. The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. The Scripture does not say “and to seeds,” meaning many people, but “and to your seed,” meaning one person, who is Christ. What I mean is this: The law, introduced 430 years later, does not set aside the covenant previously established by God and thus do away with the promise. For if the inheritance depends on the law, then it no longer depends on a promise; but God in his grace gave it to Abraham through a promise.

What, then, was the purpose of the law? It was added because of transgressions until the Seed to whom the promise referred had come. The law was put into effect through angels by a mediator. A mediator, however, does not represent just one party; but God is one.

One of the big myths about Christianity is that we win God over and restore our relationship with him by doing good things.  But the opposite is true: We are hopeless on our own and it is only by his power that we are transformed and become righteous.  The law can condemn us, but it can’t save us.

Is the law, therefore, opposed to the promises of God? Absolutely not! For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come by the law. But the Scripture declares that the whole world is a prisoner of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe.

This is hard for us to believe, but as Christians we are no longer under the curse of the law.  We were imprisoned by something we couldn’t conquer, but now we can live in freedom.  Sinning does not cost you your salvation once you have received it.

Before this faith came, we were held prisoners by the law, locked up until faith should be revealed. So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith. Now that faith has come, we are no longer under the supervision of the law.

The world wants to give more importance to certain backgrounds, skin colors, job holders, sexes, etc.  But the Bible teaches that each person has equal worth in God’s eyes.

You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Reflect on what stood out to you in this reading and share your comments and questions if you like.

Touching story about the “female Oskar Schindler,” Irena Sendler, who risked her life saving thousands of Jewish people in WWII.

Looking forward to this one: Confirmed: Tim Tebow Superbowl Ad Set to Run

No details have been released regarding the content of the ad.  Many consider it likely, however, that the ad will be related to Pam Tebow’s decision to carry her son to term after she had contracted amoebic dysentery while she was serving as a Christian missionary in the Philippines. Doctors urged her to have an abortion because drugs she took to combat the disease might have affected her baby’s development; she ignored their recommendation and gave birth a perfectly healthy child.

Tim Tebow, who was home schooled before becoming a college football star and is well known for marking his eye black with scriptural verses, has also been involved in his family’s Christian ministry.  Last year he made headlines when, in response to a reporter asking him if he was “saving himself” for marriage, he said that he was.

If you already exercise regularly then ignore this.  If not, ask yourself this: What if you had walked 3 times per week for 20-30 minutes for all of 2009?  Would you feel better?  Would you have regreted the time spent?  Would you have developed relationships with a walking partner?  And so on.

Let that be an encouragement to do something in 2010 and for the rest of your life.  You don’t have to be a triathlete.  Just do something and do it regularly.

Interesting: Fox News carries 100% of both Coakley’s and Brown’s speeches, but MSNBC and CNN carry several times more of Coakley’s than Brown’s.  But Fox has the bias, right?

Great reminder from Stan that Christians should love, give and serve with joy and not (just) out of duty.

Great witness by many of the Texas Longhorn football players, and not just post-game comments, either.  These guys set a great example year-round.  Now if they’d just lose the burnt orange school color I’d be a convert.

Nice pro football weekend.  If the Steelers aren’t in it then I don’t watch much, but I am always glad to see the Cowboys lose.  I’d be happy with any of the remaining teams winning.  Minnesota @ New Orleans should be action-packed.

As I’ve noted before, the parallels between scientific misbehavior with evolution / Intelligent Design and the Global Warming scandal are very similar.

Ever notice how people try to dismiss conservative views by labeling them as extremist?  But if 72% of Americans oppose public funding of abortions, how does that put opponents of the health care plan in the “extreme” category?

How to Deal with the Guilt of Sexual Failure for the Glory of Christ and His Global Cause – important message from John Piper about a key issue in the church.  It isn’t just about how to avoid sexual failure (though that is a great message also), but how to persevere and still serve Christ despite failures.  Hat tip: Mathew

I can understand why people are afraid or feel ill-equipped to share their faith — even though I would challenge them to work to overcome those barriers by prayer and study.  But what I can’t tolerate are the fake or wildly ignorant Christians who take pride in not sharing the Gospel, as if that is some sort of virtue.  They think Christianity is right — or at least right enough – for them, but they don’t want to share it with anyone else.

Sadomasochist testified for “gay marriage” just four days after sadistic sex- and drug-laden killing – I think the MSM forgot to report on this one.
