Happy Halloween! Sort of!

2009 update: Not only is it a great excuse to eat candy, but we get to turn back the clocks 1 hour tonight (either that or get to church an hour early tomorrow).  Doubly sweet!  Better yet, we moved this year so I can try my stupid joke on new kids.  And it is Reformation [...]

It’s a party every Saturday!

The title of the post is the nickname for the Nutcracker rehearsals each Saturday when the “party scene” is rehearsed.  The actual performances are Friday, December 4 – Sunday, December 6.

This year I get to play Dr. Stahlbaum, the host of the party, for two of the shows and a regular “party dad” for two [...]

Sonic napkins

What is the major malfunction with Sonic Drive-ins not providing enough napkins with your order?  Are they just trying to save a few pennies?
It is a running joke in our family.  We get our order, then notice that there are no napkins or perhaps two napkins for four people.  Then you ask for more and the [...]

Soul mates? Apparently not.

MomLovesBeingAtHome has a great post (Adultery – it leads to disaster) that reminded me of one of my least favorite terms: Soul mates.  Go read her post about the warning signs.  It is important to know that you can cross the line long before a relationship gets physical.
I’ve heard people rationalize divorce and remarriage because they [...]

My dogs are idiot savants.

Well, at least that is what I tell myself when they are doing something stupid.  I just picture them saying something truly profound or doing some higher math in their little brains.

Dedicated to Wishbone and Xannie, aka Cletus and Brandine, my all-time favorite dogs.

Cinderella Ballet follow up

The Cinderella Ballet performances went really well last month.  Both girls had their biggest roles ever and had great performances in all three shows.  The artistic directors who founded the company said it was the best show they had ever done and it was what they had dreamed of.
I had fun playing Cinderella’s father (Nepotism [...]

It’s a Cinderella story, Part I

From the I am not making this up department, I will be playing the role of Cinderella’s father in the Houston Repertoire Ballet’s production of Cinderella  on May 16-17.  My wife is endlessly amazed that I’m doing this because I’m the guy who doesn’t even like to dress up for Halloween.
My oldest daughter will be playing [...]

It’s a Cinderella story, Part II

Hey friends and family in NW Houston — I’m re-running this as a reminder that the shows are May 16-17 and some good seats are still available.  It is your best local fine arts value.  I’ll have pictures and a little video from dress rehearsal up next week.  It is looking good!

I’m enjoying listening [...]

Mmmmmmm . . . chicken fried bacon

We went to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo today.  This is one big deal if you like that sort of thing.  Over 21,000 volunteers put on quite the extravaganza.  I only go every 8 years or so.  As my youngest said, it is a good place to go and embrace your inner redneck.
Highlights:

Eating the [...]

I’m not a doctor, but I play one on my blog

Countless bloggers have been amused by odd search engine queries that lead people to their sites.  My personal favorite is that when seeking information about spleens people sometimes end up at my Bad Spleen Joke of the Day post.
But what was most interesting is that a website called RightHealth had an informational page about spleens [...]

The Proverbs 31 woman

This ending to Proverbs may surprise some people.  Take a close look at what this woman does.  Then go read Don’t Marry a Proverbs 31 Woman for an interesting take on it.

Proverbs 31 – The sayings of King Lemuel—an oracle his mother taught him:
2 “O my son, O son of my womb,
O son of [...]

Nutcracker follow up

The Nutcracker performances went really well.  The girls nailed their roles, especially the major ones, and everyone had a good time.  They’ve worked hard on this since late August and it is great to see it all pay off for them.  All five shows either sold out or had large crowds.  I got to watch [...]

The Nutcracker Ballet (the “t” is silent)

Ticket still available for the shows on December 5 -7.
Go to HRB Tickets or buy them at the door.

This is my annual Nutcracker post, which is one of those family pieces that not everyone will care about.  You’ve been warned.
If you are in the NW Houston area and would like to get tickets to any [...]

My poor dog

Xannie (short for Xannax, the anti-anxiety medicine) had to get some fatty tumors removed and has quite a few stiches. She needs to wear this “Elizabethan Collar” for a while. She bumps into things all over.

Honduran home remedy

We were very careful about not drinking the water in Honduras, but you never know who might get an upset stomach on a mission trip.  The local missionaries were adamant that as soon as you felt even a little queasy that you should drink the juice of a whole lime or lemon plus a fair [...]

Family & friends update

The girls left for their 5 weeks of ballet workshops.  We’ve halfway through our mini-empty nest phase (it has become an annual thing).  Kim just left for her parents for a week so it is just the dogs and me for now.  I plan to get tons of chores, blogging and guitar playing done in addition [...]
