1 John 2  11 And this is the testimony, that God gave useternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

Anti-Catholic or Pro-Gospel? — Answer: Pro-Gospel.  A great list of questions to ask.  By their own words, Catholics should consider Protestants as anathema.  As I am quick to graciously tell people, I’m not offended if they think I’m wrong.  I just want them to be fair and not get snippy because I think they are wrong.  Let’s look at our common source of truth, the Bible!

If anyone says that the Catholic doctrine of justification as set forth by the holy council in the present decree, derogates in some respect from the glory of God or the merits of our Lord Jesus Christ, and does not rather illustrate the truth of our faith and no less the glory of God and of Christ Jesus, let him be anathema. (Canon 33)

This is the heart of the issue, isn’t it? The Roman Catholic doctrine of justification, as laid out by the Council of Trent, and as systematized in the canons, does that very thing—it diminishes the glory of God and the merits of Jesus Christ. It adds to Christ’s work. To add anything to Christ’s work is to destroy it altogether.

As I read the canons of the Council of Trent I see a systematic explanation and thorough denial of justification by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. I see that Rome understands what I believe and declares it anathema. Of course it is her right to do this, but let’s not miss some important implications: Whatever else Rome teaches, she will not teach that we are justified solely by grace through faith in Christ Jesus. If she teaches a gospel that adds to the work of Christ, she teaches a false gospel, doesn’t she? And if Francis is the head of the organization that states this as official doctrine, if he is her chief defender and propagator, I must judge him a false teacher. What else could I do?

Divorce Beltway Style — This is a fascinating and important article that should unite citizens on the Left and Right.  We all lose when these influence peddlers buy off both sides.  They are taking our money and sharing it.  Period.  Big Government inevitably leads to this.

“I see lobbying,” Tony Podesta has said, “as getting information in the hands of people who are making decisions so they can make more informed decisions.” Last week the information Tony Podesta was giving was the divorce complaint he had filed in D.C. Court against his wife Heather. The hands receiving that information belonged to a gossip columnist for the Washington Post, who made the “informed decision” to report on it. Later in the day Heather, who is also a lobbyist, informed the Post the text of her counter-suit. It published a follow-up.

The documents, which you can read below, did not become available to the rest of us until yesterday. They tell stories not only of a May-December romance gone sour, but of how obscene wealth can be amassed through rent-seeking and influence-peddling in Washington D.C., and of the hoary means by which the princelings of the capital and their consorts maintain and grow that wealth. They tell stories not only of an ugly divorce, but of the power of lobbying, of how one family maneuvered to the center of the nation’s dominant political party, of the transactional relationships, gargantuan self-regard, and empty posturing that insulates, asbestos-like, the D.C. bubble.

Citizens, Looters, and The Police – Why We Need The 2nd Amendment – The Ferguson fiasco should make even Democrats support the 2nd Amendment.

So that leaves the citizen where? In desperate need of a firearm. The police will either overact massively or they will just let the looters eat you. I’m still reminded of the old 8mm films I saw of the Rodney King Riots in LA. There was one island of LA that wasn’t featured in the film. That ran from Vermont and Pico to 3rd and Olympic. It was Korea Town and it wasn’t seriously looted because the people that lived there organized a citizen’s militia and defended their stores all night long.

When people tell you the 2nd Amendment is outdated, compare what happened in Korea Town during the LA Riots to what happened on La Brea. When people tell you the 2nd Amendment is for troglodytes, remind them that our President was too busy golfing to care that Ferguson, MO was on fire. When people tell you that the 2nd Amendment is for Red Neck Losers, remind them that the Missouri State Police ordered their officers to do nothing while looters attacked and destroyed people’s businesses. There are times when the only protection you have for your life, liberty and property is the weapon you can place in your hands.

The Spasmodic Hercules — great advice.  This applies to career, education, parenting health & fitness and especially spiritual growth.

The spasmodic Hercules: this is how many of us behave. We behave as if one moment of great activity can overcome a thousand moments of inactivity, as if one moment of taking hold of opportunity will overcome all those moments wasted. The unglamorous habit of frequency is what makes up so much of life’s progress. Yet we are constantly tempted to put our hope in the brief and the glamorous.

PHOTO COLLECTION: ‘Peaceful Protesters’ Vandalize, Loot & Destroy #Ferguson Businesses — Let’s say you are opening a business and need to decide on a location.  Review the pictures at the link knowing that the vendors with damaged stores did nothing wrong but were looted and vandalized because people were mad about some other event.  Would that make you more or less likely to want to invest in that area?  Explain.

The Rick Perry Veto and Ferguson: Holding the Police State Accountable – The link is meaningful: Public employees who think they are above the law.  Aside from having three times the legal limit of alcohol while driving, she abused her power repeatedly to avoid accountability.  Then the Leftists doubled down to abuse power again and blame Perry!

She denied: “I wasn’t drunk.”

She threatened: “You all better do something quick ‘cause you all are gonna be in jail, not me.”

She dismissed: “That’s your alls’ problem, not mine.”

She resisted: “Yea I did [kick and pound on doors].

She demanded: “Get these cuffs off my arms.”

She questioned: “What is wrong with you people.”

She belittled: “Because some cop pulled me over.”

She blamed: “You’ve ruined my entire political career.”

But most importantly, she told them who she is, repeatedly: “I’m the district attorney, so you should listen to me.”

And who she believes she can’t possibly be: “Look at me, I’m restrained like a criminal.”

Lehmberg is not unfit to prosecute political corruption because she made the mistake of driving while intoxicated. She is unfit because she holds the belief that earned the Ferguson Police Department national scorn: She believes she is above the law.

What John Quincy Adams Said About Immigration Will Blow Your Mind — Wow.  Read it all.  I wish we would publish this to the world.

It was explicitly stated to you, and your report has taken just notice of the statement, that the government of the United States has never adopted any measure to encourage or invite emigrants from any part of Europe. It has never held out any incitements to induce the subjects of any other sovereign to abandon their own country, to become inhabitants of this. From motives of humanity it has occasionally furnished facilities to emigrants who, having arrived here with views of forming settlements, have specially needed such assistance to carry them into effect. Neither the general government of the union, nor those of the individual states, are ignorant or unobservant of the additional strength and wealth, which accrues to the nation, by the accession of a mass of healthy, industrious, and frugal laborers, nor are they in any manner insensible to the great benefits which this country has derived, and continues to derive, from the influx of such adoptive children from Germany.

But there is one principle which pervades all the institutions of this country, and which must always operate as an obstacle to the granting of favors to new comers. This is a land, not of privileges, but of equal rights. Privileges are granted by European sovereigns to particular classes of individuals, for purposes of general policy; but the general impression here is that privileges granted to one denomination of people, can very seldom be discriminated from erosions of the rights of others.

Emigrants from Germany, therefore, or from elsewhere, coming here, are not to expect favors from the governments. They are to expect, if they choose to become citizens, equal rights with those of the natives of the country. They are to expect, if affluent, to possess the means of making their property productive, with moderation, and with safety;—if indigent, but industrious, honest and frugal, the means of obtaining easy and comfortable subsistence for themselves and their families.

Immigrants ‘come to a life of independence, but to a life of labor…’

They come to a life of independence, but to a life of labor—and, if they cannot accommodate themselves to the character, moral, political, and physical, of this country, with all its compensating balances of good and evil, the Atlantic is always open to them, to return to the land of their nativity and their fathers.

A Leftist false teacher I know linked to a “progressive Christian” site and added this gem:

“Not for people who are certain they already have all the answers.”

I sent him this private note (probably should have put it on the main FB page but didn’t want to embarrass him in front of his congregants).

Thanks, I think I’ll borrow that line when I link to posts by Bible-believing (read: authentic) Christians. By doing so I can pre-emptively dismiss the views of anyone who disagrees with me as being arrogant because they think they have “all the answers.” Pure passive-aggressive ad hominem gold!

ROUNDUP TIMEPsalm 37:4 Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

What Democrats Fear Most Is A Black Conservative — Yep.  And one of the things white conservatives like most is black conservatives, because we are all about ideas and we appreciate people who stand up for what is right despite being labeled “Uncle Tom” and worse.

My response to Mr. Robinson and his readers over at the Daily Kos is yes, I stand by every word in my article. The only way to get out of poverty is education and hard work. School choice is a better alternative to a good education compared to a failing public school system. The Republican Party is a better choice for all Americans who want a smaller government that supports individual constitutional rights and promotes an economy where every citizen who wants a job will be able to obtain one.

The Ebola-like Plague of Anti-Semitism Sweeping the West – This is creepy and surprising.  I know there are many who hate Jewish people, but I figured that some amount of shame would keep them quiet.  But they are getting as vocal as the Muslims.  I am amazed that so many Jews don’t see how Bible-believing Christians are their best friends.

My parents, who have lived in Jerusalem for 22 years, recently met their new neighbors. They are French Jews from Paris who describe themselves as refugees. ” We came to the conclusion that there was simply no future for us in France. Jews are targets there and the government cannot and does not want to protect them. France is lost.”

Their message resonated with me as I returned to Israel from a speaking tour of Southern Africa. In South Africa I watched as President Jacob Zuma and many of his secondary ministers, fulminated about the international crimes of the Israeli government in Gaza. In Namibia, a country with only a handful of Jews and with no previous strong record of antisemitic animus, television news programs consistently portrayed a one dimensional view of the conflict, failing entirely to present the context of Operation Protective Edge and castigating the worldwide Jewish support for Israel as the primary culprit.

In Ethiopia, where I stayed for two days, almost everyone I met seemed to think that Israeli war crimes deserved international sanction and that Jews should be made to pay reparations for the destruction of Gaza hospitals and educational facilities.

And In Germany, demonstrators in Berlin – and not just Muslims – could be heard yelling “Death to Israel”, and “Zionists are fascists, killing children and civilians!”

In Australia, a country with a very strong record of governmental support for Israel, a cartoon in one of the country’s leading dailies depicted a hook-nosed Jew reclining in a chair marked with a Star of David casually using a remote to destroy Gazan property.

And In Germany, demonstrators in Berlin – and not just Muslims – could be heard yelling “Death to Israel”, and “Zionists are fascists, killing children and civilians!” and a Berlin imam was recorded using his sermons to ask Allah to kill the Jews “to the very last one.”

In response, the President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, Dieter Graumnn said; “We are currently experiencing in this country an explosion of evil and violent hatred of Jews. We would never in our lives have thought it possible any more that anti-Semitic views of the nastiest and most primitive kind can be chanted on German streets. Jews are once again openly threatened in Germany and sometimes attacked.”

Atheist TV is a bust, and no wonder — Sad day!

It can’t even wow Salon:

And yet after watching four hours of its programming and even despite my own lack of religious belief, I find it hard to imagine that even a casual nonbeliever would tune in, let alone someone on the fence about the existence of a higher power. AtheistTV adheres to nasty stereotypes about atheism — smugness, gleeful disregard for others’ beliefs — to a degree that’s close to unwatchable.

Socialism Has Never Worked and Can’t — Read it all.  Great points about human nature and the doomed-to-fail approach of socialism.

We often hear that “the only reason socialism has never worked” is that the “wrong people” were “in charge.” I always wonder what angels the leftists think don’t have donors or special interest groups they are beholden to. Donors and special interest groups tend to want laws bent to their desires. Where would those Angels come from?

Socialism doesn’t, and cannot, work — not because the wrong people have been in charge, but because it goes against human nature. Human nature doesn’t ever change. There have always been good people and evil people, generous people and greedy people, industrious people and lazy-asses….. And there always will be.

Man was not designed for mediocrity. Man was designed to compete, to question, to explore, to innovate, and to bond with others. Man was designed to form close ties with family, friends, community, and country. Our bodies produce chemicals that reward us for those things ~ and socialism goes against every last one of them.

Nobody is ‘born that way,’ gay historians say — The “born that way” myth is almost as old as the 10% lie.  Save the link to share with the next person who thinks Lady Gaga is an authoritative source.

San Francisco AFTER the ‘Public Nudity Ban’ – AFTAH Exposes Depraved and Nudity-Filled ‘Up Your Alley’ Street Fair — Super-duper WARNING: Definitely NSFW and you may not want to see it even at home.  But that warning is as ironic as it is serious, because the pictures in question were taken in public.  Remember, people take their kids to these “pride” parades.

How Are Women Saved Through Childbearing? — I liked this analysis of a challenging verse (1 Tim. 2:15).  It makes a lot more sense than other explanations I’ve read.

Henry Alford notices that being saved “through” something does not have to mean being saved “by” it, but may mean being saved through it as through a danger. He also notices that Paul does combine the two words (“being saved” and “through”) this way in 1 Corinthians 3:15. “If anyone’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire.”

Could “She will be saved through childbearing,” mean “She will be saved, not by means of, but through (that is, in spite of) the engulfing pains of childbirth”? . . .

Even though many women today and in history may feel the ongoing effects of the curse in the pains of childbirth and the lifelong wounds that it may leave, I urge all of our Christian sisters not to despair. God’s word to you is hope, not curse. God’s plan for you is salvation not destruction.

Yes, just as the man must work out his salvation through the cursed futilities and miseries of his labor (Genesis 3:18–19), millions of women must find her salvation through the pains and miseries of childbearing. The path of salvation is the same for her as for all the saints: “continuing in faith and love and holiness, with self-control.”

Jesus Christ is the Savior who became a curse for us (Galatians 3:13). The sting of the curse has been removed. It cannot damn us anymore. Faith in him is the link to the Savior. Love, holiness, and self-control are the authenticating fruits of this faith.

At the last day every vestige of the curse will be undone and every wound will be healed. That is part of what it means to be saved through faith in Christ.

Obama and Liberal Courts Engineer the Worst Prison Break in American History — This is something an enemy of the U.S. would do.

Immigration officials knowingly released dozens of murderers and thousands of drunken drivers back into the U.S. in 2013, according to Obama administration statistics that could undercut the president’s argument that he is trying to focus on the most serious criminals in his immigration enforcement.

Among the 36,000 immigrants whom U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement released from custody last year there were 116 with convictions for homicide, 43 for negligent manslaughter, 14 for voluntary manslaughter and one with a conviction classified by ICE as “homicide-willful kill-public official-gun.”

The immigrants were in deportation proceedings, meaning ICE was trying to remove them from the country and could have held them in detention but released them anyway…

“This would be considered the worst prison break in American history, except it was sanctioned by the president and perpetrated by our own immigration officials,” said Rep. Lamar Smith, Texas Republican. “The administration’s actions are outrageous. They willfully and knowingly put the interests of criminal immigrants before the safety and security of the American people.”

Great men on Islam — I hate it when politically correct people, including pastors and President Bush, say what a peaceful religion it is.  I’m with Churchill:

“Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities, but the influence of the religion paralyzes the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world.”

Breaking A “Pay-It-Forward” Chain Isn’t Being A “Cheap Bastard.” It’s Good Economics — If you want to “pay it forward” like this, be my guest.  I don’t want to steal anyone’s joy.  But people don’t seem to understand what is really going on here.  Pressuring someone to donate sucks the fun out of it for them.  They aren’t able to give cheerfully, à la 2 Corinthians 9.  And Starbucks is making money off of everyone, so the notion that they should get positive public relations from this is a joke.

When you combine coffee with a poor understanding of economics, two things can happen: You feel smug and self-congratulatory, or you demonize the wrong person. Both happened at the same Starbucks this week, when a chain of 378 people “paying it forward” was supposedly broken by “some cheap-ass” in a white Jeep.

“Cheap Bastard Ends 10 Hours of Starbucks Customers ‘Paying it Forward’” was Gawker’s headline summary of the event. The news, which began in a local paper, even made the Today show.

Everyone seems to misunderstand what’s actually happening during these “pay-it-forward” chains, which occasionally develop at this and other coffee joints. So let’s break it down, at the end of which you’ll understand this: The woman in the white Jeep is innocent. And nobody involved in these chains should be overly pleased with themselves.

The least superstitious people are conservative evangelical Republicans, while the most superstitious people are Democrat liberals who don’t attend church.

More Women Picking Up Guns — Good news.

The number of American women picking up guns for fun is growing.  There are now over 6 million female target shooters in the U.S. — up over 70 percent in the last decade — and those taking up hunting as a sport is now over 3 million.

But more surprising than those numbers is that it was CBS This Morning reporting that story earlier this week and doing so in a positive way.  As a native Texan living in the heart of gun-controlled Washington, D.C., I have to give kudos to CBS correspondent Jan Crawford for straight-shooting this story.  I loved what one of the shooting instructors she interviewed said, “We’re playing golf basically, only with a shotgun…”

Venezuela to Require Fingerprinting to Buy Food — Socialism is awesome.

Dragonfly both perfect at first AND “the perfected result” of 300 mya of evolution? —  Such is the problem when assuming the tautology that is Darwinian evolution.

Philosopher Laszlo Bencze reflects on a recent National Geographic program on dragonflies:

First I hear, “The dragonfly, the perfected result of 300 million years of evolution.’’ Then a few minutes later I hear, “The dragonfly was perfect when I first appeared 300 million years ago.” I guess the producers of these shows don’t bother listening to what they’re saying as long as they are saying something about evolution and how wonderful it is. Oh, and there’s not a word about how the imperfections of the dragonfly might reveal the random meanderings of an evolutionary process. Nope, it’s the perfection of the dang thing that tells us evolution is responsible even though it doesn’t change a bit after it first appears.

The Silent Terror: Media Ignoring Islamic Radical’s Murder of Seattle Gay Men?

Noah Rothman at Hot Air suggests the national media is ignoring Brown’s murder spree precisely because it is Islamic terrorism. Certainly, if these killings had been committed by anyone who could be portrayed as “right-wing,” there would be wall-to-wall coverage on CNN and MSNBC, liberal blogs would be going crazy and President Obama would be welcoming the families of the victims at the White House. But that’s not happening, is it?

The Matthew Sheppard killing had something to teach us. There were many, many reports about that. It was the most infamous single American murder of that decade.

In this case, three gay men were murdered. Three.

Not even a blip on the national news radar screens.

You know what this reminds me of? The “Asian rape gang” phenomenon.

Schoolgirls in England, some as young as 12, were basically being “groomed,” seduced and pimped out by gangs of Islamic men. (In Britain, “Asian” is a term used to describe immigrants or the children of immigrants from Pakistan or wherever, most of whom are Muslim.) These stories made tabloid headlines, but the respectable “mainstream” media was hopelessly gagged by political correctness and the fear of being perceived as racist or “Islamophobic.” However, despite this self-imposed blackout by the respectable press, everyone in England knows what is really happening. The subhuman status assigned to women in Islamic cultures is certainly no secret, yet British feminists were suspiciously mute about the rape gangs.

There is a conspiracy of silence, you see, which includes both gay activists in America and feminists in England, to suppress the brutal truth about Islamic jihad and what it really means. Why is this? Because the gay-rights movement and the feminist movement are both part of the progressive Left, which aims to destroy Western civilization — and Islam is their ally in that regard.

Media curiously silent on “Truthy” – How odd!  Wouldn’t the mainstream media oppose the government using tax money to do the media’s job?

It’s been a couple of days since the Washington Free Beacon’s Elizabeth Harrington first reported on the three-year-old  federal grant from the National Science Foundation for the “Truthy” database, and … not much else has happened. Blogs have picked it up, including our own Mary Katharine, and Reason’s Bobby Soave did a good job of highlighting its inherent contradictions. Twitchy has collated a number of tongue-in-cheek attempts to kick-start Truthy. Other than that, the national media appears to have gone radio silent on this latest project; according to a Bing news search this morning, no national outlet has yet picked up the story from WFB.

That’s interesting, because one might have guessed that they would take notice of a million-dollar effort to encroach on their fact-checking turf. In my column for The Week today, I wonder why the federal government is spending a million dollars to create a mechanism that sounds like it could come straight out of Orwell when we have a perfectly good private-sector market for free speech . . .

As Food Stamp Program Explodes, Efforts to Combat Fraud Decline — Food stamps are 50% since Obama took office.  That’s part of the plan (see Cloward/Piven and Alinsky — if you haven’t heard of them, that’s part of the problem).

Why would an explosively growing federal program not see a corresponding growth in efforts to prevent fraud?

Because it does not serve the government’s purposes to prevent fraud. It doesn’t make an difference to Obama or his bureaucracy whether you need food stamps — only that you take them.

Evolutionary ethics underlay or influenced almost every major feature of Nazi policy: eugenics . . . euthanasia, racism, population expansion, offensive warfare and racial extermination. Hitler’s ethic was essentially an evolutionary ethic that exalted biological progress above all other moral considerations. Humans must adapt to and even model themselves after the laws of nature.

One of the all-time foolish, deadly and hypocritical quotes.  Anyone saying such a thing hasn’t put much thought into it, because you can just reverse it to justify guns — and you’d be much more accurate as well! (“If allowing guns and ammunition can save just one child . . .”)

What makes it worse, of course, is a pro-abortion extremist pretending to care about children.  If banning abortion could save just one child . . .

ROUNDUP TIMERepublican party coming out in support for Uber’s cheaper cab rides — What’s not to like?  People save money and, for those that believe the “climate change” sound bites, you cut down on traffic and emissions.  The only people who lose are crony capitalists and the politicians taking their donations bribes.

Short version: it’s an app that matches people who need a taxi to somewhere with a local driver willing to sell them a ride.  The taxi companies hate it with the white-hot fury of a billion exploding suns, because it’s: cheaper; more reliable; more transparent (you can look up the drivers and leave feedback on rides); and threatens to make a taxi medallion pretty much worthless.  Which is why some urban areas – Democratic controlled, naturally – are starting toprotect the taxi companies by effectively banning cheaper cab rides. But that’s fine: that means that the GOP can weigh in on the side of free markets and cheaper cab rides.  I am so totally happy to encourage them to do that:

The RNC last week launched a pro-free market, anti-government regulations petition to show support for the Uber – building their own lists and raising money in the process. “Government has a role to play, but that role isn’t to protect the status quo. It should be consumers, not government bureaucrats or legislators, that decide what companies get our business,” Priebus said. Priebus echoed that sentiment with an op-ed in the Chicago Tribune, coordinated with the RNC’s annual summer meeting in that city, that lauded Uber-friendly Illinois Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner over Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn. The Democrats whined something terrible about this new initiative of the GOP’s, which merely means that it’s working.  The basic issue here is the same as the one that you get with every industrial revolution*: a technological innovation has made a guild’s operating methodology essentially obsolete, and the guild doesn’t like it in the slightest. In this case, the guild are the taxi companies, who have had a nice, cozy arrangement with local governments to artificially limit the number of taxis on the road in many locations.  The governments make large amounts of money selling taxi medallions to companies; the companies jack up prices because they have a cartel going; and consumers grumble.  Until they can side-step the entire process by going online to find cheaper cab rides.

I also found it sadly interesting that he had a child aborted back in the 70’s.  No one knows for sure, but how much could that have impacted his depression and drug use?  As Crime & Punishment, Macbeth, the Telltale Heart, etc. so clearly exposed the human condition, we can try to rationalize away reality but it is still there.

An interesting exchange about the bridal shop owner who wouldn’t make the dress for the lesbian, which of course prompted the loving, tolerant crowd to vent all their wrath on her.

An atheist wrote this:

I’d like to manage my own cake shop and then ~not~ give any signs of my militant atheism until Christians come to my business to order something, and then I’ll slip free sample CDs of Greydon Square’s music into their cake boxes, and also should they request any religious imagery be painted on the cake, they will instead get a portrait of Neil deGrasse Tyson. I want to do this so I can see how fast I am plastered all over Fox News as a “bigot.” I mean, I’m only doing what Hobby Lobby and other “religious freedom” rulings have laid the slippery slope groundwork for, what’s good for the goose is good for the gander, no??? Or is it only when hateful opinions are backed up by religious reasons that they matter enough to be given special treatment? lol.

My reply:
That’s nonsense. If you want to make a valid analogy, then pretend that I ask you to make a cake with a cross on it. You say no, because you are a Romans 1 poster boy. I say, “Have a blessed day,” and go somewhere else while praying for your soul. The end.
If you put in an atheist CD no one will care. If you put the wrong image on the cake, then we’d ask for a refund, just as if you put the wrong name on a birthday cake. But thanks for admitting that you would do something dishonest. That’s telling.

Is Oral Sex Okay? — John Piper offers some biblical perspectives.

Thomas Sowell explains how liberal pacifism causes wars – Great points, plus the Wintry Knight’s comments below.

Everybody wants peace. Everyone – on both sides of the issue. The problem is that one side – the leftists – call their opponents names like “imperialist” and talk “disarmament” and “dialog” as if they have have the answer to peace. That doesn’t work and it has never worked. Pacifism only “works” in the classroom, where naive children are forced to parrot the opinions of their secular leftist teachers who have no expertise in war or history. What has actually worked in history is peace through strength. Strength deters wars, strength deters violence. Strength – and the will to use that strength to restrain evil.

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Houston Rejects Petition to Send LGBT Anti-Bias Policy to Voters – That’s what you get for electing Leftists who admit it is all about them.

Conservative Christians in Houston filed suit against Mayor Annise Parker’s administration after city officials ruled invalid a petition to overturn a new LGBT anti-bias ordinance. City officials threw out thousands of signatures that would have forced the city to put the ordinance on the November ballot. But conservatives are not willing to declare defeat yet.

Parker in May rammed through her “Equal Rights Ordinance” in hearings some called a sham. Supporters say the ordinance is a generic rights rule that simply adds “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” to a list of other protected classes. But Parker, who is open about her homosexual relationship, has publicly declared the ordinance “about me.”

Religious liberty experts say the ordinance clearly forces Christian organizations and businesses to act against their biblical beliefs about sexuality. Among other things, the ordinance bans Christian colleges from enforcing sexual conduct policies in housing. It also opens public restrooms to anyone, regardless of gender. Expecting a legal challenge, Parker delayed the ordinance’s implementation.

. . . The documents themselves back up at least some of Welch’s concerns. The city charter places the responsibility for verifying signatures on City Secretary Anna Russell. By her own admission, in a report sent to Parker, Russell said she verified more than enough signatures by July 27 to put the petition on the ballot. But before releasing her final decision, she allowed Feldman extraordinary power to review the petition.

. . .“What I witnessed was a mockery of the rule of law—again—by a mayor who blatantly interfered in the right of the citizens to petition our government,” Welch told the U.S. Pastor’s Council. Parker is a “radical” who is “willing to do anything in order to achieve a legacy,” he said.

Oops: In 2009, Obama Administration told Delphi to avoid U.S. taxes via corporate inversion.

This is both delicious and maddening. Delicious because it so clearly shows what a complete fraud this whole narrative about corporate inversions is. The administration just recently started talking about inversions, but they’ve been happening for a long time, and the administration not only didn’t think it was a big deal, they were actually willing to encourage it when it was in their own best interests or in the interests of a company – like Delphi – that they couldn’t afford to see go under. Maddening, because today the Democrats need a new political narrative, so they’re yelping about corporate inversions and trying to pass new legislation to essentially ban the practice. And since that doesn’t square with their own recent history where Delphi is concerned, they have now sicced the IRS on Delphi and told them to surrender the tax advantages that the administration actually encouraged and helped them to obtain five years ago.

A Good Way to Wreck a Local Economy: Build Casinos – The Atlantic – Even The Simpsons knew casinos were bad for economies.

Outside of Las Vegas—now home to only 20 percent of the nation’s casino industry—casino gambling has evolved into a downscale business. Affluent and educated people visit casinos less often than poorer people do for the same reasons that they smoke less and drink less and weigh less. . . . No one should look to casinos to revive cities, “because that’s not what casinos do.” So explained the project manager for a new Wynn casino rising near Philadelphia. He’s right, but it has taken a surprisingly long time for city governments to acknowledge a fact that was well understood by the 19th-century Americans who suppressed gambling in the decades after the Civil War. The impact of casinos on neighboring property values is “unambiguously negative,” according to the economists at the National Association of Realtors. Casinos don’t encourage non-gaming businesses to open nearby, because the people who most often visit casinos do not wander out to visit other shops and businesses. A casino is not like a movie theater or a sports stadium, offering a time-limited amusement. It is designed to be an all-absorbing environment that does not release its customers until they have exhausted their money.

Acts 29 Network Removes Co-founder Mark Driscoll and Mars Hill Church From Membership – This is great news. We have been so blessed by the Acts 29 network. We attend an Acts 29 church and it is amazing. Both my daughters attended them when they went to college (actually, they were there before us) and were equally blessed.  So glad to see leaders doing the loving thing and exercising church discipline! I hope others are emboldened by this and do the same. No one should be above it, including “rock star” pastors. Hopefully it will lead Driscoll to repent, but either way it was the right thing to do.  I appreciate the discernment ministries that have brought attention to Driscoll’s issues, but it was disappointing that most seemed to take a “What took you so long?” grandstanding response rather than an encouraging one.

It is with deep sorrow that the Acts 29 Network announces its decision to remove Mark Driscoll and Mars Hill Church from membership in the network. Mark and the Elders of Mars Hill have been informed of the decision, along with the reasons for removal. It is our conviction that the nature of the accusations against Mark, most of which have been confirmed by him, make it untenable and unhelpful to keep Mark and Mars Hill in our network. In taking this action, our prayer is that it will encourage the leadership of Mars Hill to respond in a distinctive and godly manner so that the name of Christ will not continue to be dishonored. Some excellent points from Wretched:

Twelve Lessons from the Mark Driscoll Explosion

An explosion has occurred in Evangelical Christianity.  Mark Driscoll has been expelled from the movement that he himself founded: The Acts 29 Network. If you have not read the widely circulated letter that has been made public, you may read it below. There is much to be learned from this explosion.

  1. Mark Driscoll is in big trouble.  Reading this letter was like hearing an excommunication announcement in church.  While this letter does not state this, it is clear, Mark’s spiritual condition is perilous. When a thoughtful and prayerful group of Christian friends asks you to“step down from ministry for an extended time and seek help,” you are inspiritual danger.
  2. This is no time for piling on.  While we can be grateful to the leaders of the Acts 29 Network for their Biblical actions, a man who professes to be a follower of Jesus Christ is in trouble.  It is clear he is not fit for ministry at this time, or ever.  Worse, there are clearly some on-going  sins that need to be dealt with.  This is not the time for “I told you so.”
  3. Mark’s family has been rocked.  Nobody wishes that on a wife and children.
  4. Mark’s church has been rocked.  Souls have been damaged and some bruised reeds will be bent.
  5. The Board of Acts 29 has acted boldly, wisely, thoughtfully and courageously.  Would that more evangelical organizations did the same.
  6. Accountability is good.  Cowboy Christians typically end up like Wild Bill Hickok.
  7. Immaturity, the root of Mark’s problems, can be a disqualifying character flaw for a pastor.
  8. John MacArthur, Phil Johnson and others have been proven right in their critiques.  We would do well to listen to older, wiser, experienced men in the future.
  9. For Mark’s sake, those of us who are watching from a distance should stop: listening to his sermons, recommending him to others, attending his events, buying his books, reading his articles. Let the full weight of this land on him that he might genuinely repent.  Perhaps for the first time.
  10. Virtually everyone in leadership with Mark should be examined to determine their fitness for leadership also.
  11. Celebrity Christianity is a dangerous category.
  12. We will learn much about evangelical Christianity as the days pass and blogs are written.  Will they be written with the difficult but commanded blend of “truth and love,” or will they be snarky?  This is a test for us too.  May we not sin in response to Mark’s sins.

This is a day of mixed emotions.  Godly men acted courageously, but a man is in perilous danger.  We should be grateful and horrified at the same time.  Let us remember to “take heed, lest we too shall fall”. (I Cor.10:12).

Former NFL Pro Explains Why He’s a Republican: Democrats Are Destroying Black Communities – Love it.  (That’s he’s a Republican, not that Democrats are destroying black communities.)

Garry Cobb played football for USC and then for 11 years with the Philadelphia Eagles. He is now running for New Jersey’s 1st District seat as a Republican, and his explanation of why he is no longer a Democrat is very compelling. Explaining that he kind of discovered that he was Republican due to his upbringing, he said that the massively negative effects of Lyndon Johnson’s War on Poverty had the most impact: This was an incentive for the man to leave the home and it’s destroyed African-American families throughout the country.   I didn’t realize it but as I started thinking about it and growing up, because as a kid going to college, you know I was all into the Democratic Party and everything; then I started realizing they helped destroy our communities and we’re supposed to be celebrating electing these people.   One of the towns in our areas, Camden, is still suffering. I want to put an end to this.

Trying to Stop Global Warming Costs 50 Times More Than Adapting to It – If you love your neighbor you won’t subject them to the futile and outrageously expensive and counterproductive efforts to fight climate change.

There is going to be climate change. There always has been and there always will be. Nothing anyone can do will stop it. But let’s pretend just for argument that temperatures are still rising like they did last century, that warmer temperatures are bad, and that they are caused by CO2 emissions, which to a small degree humans can control. What would be the reasonable course of action? The answer is easy when you consider that attempting to stop climate change costs 50 times more than adapting to it if and as it happens . . .

Pyromaniacs: The Pastoral “Call,” and how there isn’t one.—Great reminder about a mistake made by people who should know better.

What verse in the Bible talks about a pastor’s “call”?
The answer, of course, is no verse. Not one.
“But what about Jeremiah, Moses, Samuel, Isaiah, Amos, and all the rest?” What about them? We must at least say this: they all have the same two things in common —

  1. They all are prophets.
  2. They all are not pastors of Christian churches.

. . . “Then how does a man know whether he’s ca… whether he’s supposed to be a pastor?”
Well, you tell me.
Do you believe in the sufficiency of Scripture? Really? Then it should have an in-context, sufficient answer, shouldn’t it?
What does it say? When you closely study and reflect on passages that expressly address the issue of pastoral qualification (1 Tim. 3:1ff.; Titus 1:6ff.), what do you see? Can you discern anything that is better expressed in terms of a “call”? Do they overwhelm you with internal, mystical, privately-revelatory elements? Or are they not rather almost shocking in their relative matter-of-factness?

Leaked CBP Report Shows Entire World Exploiting Open US Border—Ignoring this is not just incompetence, it is treason.

UK NHS creates taxpayer-funded sperm bank for lesbians and single mothers – Stunningly foolish and evil.

Women are persuading doctors to perform free cosmetic surgery on the NHS by exaggerating their unhappiness with their looks.

New research reveals that surgeons are being cajoled into offering patients thousands of pounds worth of treatment they do not need. It exposes the lengths to which some women go to persuade surgeons to operate on them for nothing – using ploys such as unflattering make-up and clothing.

Among the operations being offered free are tummy tucks, breast implants and nose jobs.

Today surgeons claim the soaring demand for cosmetic surgery on the NHS is putting a huge strain on resources. They say many patients are placing doctors in an impossible position by refusing to accept they cannot have free surgery.

[...]Top 10 operations

Most requested cosmetic surgery on the NHS:

1: Tummy tucks

2: Mole removal

3: Breast enhancement

4: Scar removal

5: Nose job

6: Breast reduction

7: Acne scar removal

8: Correcting breast asymmetry

9: Ear pinned back

10: Removal of bags under eyes

Why is this happening? Because when government takes over areas of the private economy, it becomes about buying votes from voters want free goodies paid for by their neighbors. It’s not just cosmetic surgery – abortions are taxpayer-funded in the NHS as well. And not just one abortion, but multiple abortions. It’s perfect and there are no losers. Except for the people being aborted, the people who pay into the system and die waiting for surgery, the men who have to pay taxes and force their wives to work to make ends meet and the fatherless children raised by lesbians and single mothers. Oh, and of course sex-change operations are free in the UK, as are sex-selection abortions. This is what socialized “medicine” really looks like. As you can tell, the social programs seem to be especially targeted to women voters. It especially rewards those who are irresponsible and reckless.

Do you favor government taking over health care in the United States? Then you better know what you are asking for.

Frigidity is ugly — It is sad that too many Christian leaders actually encourage women to try to control men with sex and/or encourage men to be controlled by it.  There is a better way.

Commenter Jen reminds us that miserliness isn’t the only option for a wife:

Honestly, if a woman loves her husband, even if she’s NOT in the mood, she’ll be more than happy to acquiesce simply out of her love for and desire to please him & make him happy (which ought to, by default, make her even happier she said yes). And this is not “duty sex” or “Oh, FINE” sex, but “All right, Sweetheart!” and happily off the couple goes. IMO there is no room for the “duty” or grudging sex in marriage, because the woman is only “giving” grudgingly, and that is not giving at all, and may be just as cruel as denying. I wouldn’t like it if my husband acted that way. (God loves a cheerful giver! Perhaps that ought to be embroidered onto bedsheets…)

Many have grown so accustomed to the miserly perspective of feminism, where even love for family is subject to a penny pinching curmudgeonly attitude, that they forget that it doesn’t have to be this way.  Feminism is ugly because it teaches women to be misers with love, and frigidity is all about being miserly with love.  This feminist obsession with miserliness has caused large numbers of women to scorn what is beautiful to God;  what could be uglier than that?

How to keep the spark alive – Interesting analysis of sex and successful marriages.

Why do married couples have sex? And how can they ensure that they keep enjoying the sexual relationship throughout their marriage? This weekend I read through a pair of recent studies from the University of Toronto that offer some intriguing, though not shocking answers.

A study called “Keeping the Spark Alive,” begins with the distinction between communal and exchange relationships. In communal relationships a spouse is motivated to meet the needs of the other partner, giving benefits of various kinds without demanding anything in return. In contrast, exchange relationships are built on the expectation that when benefits are given, other benefits will be returned. Not surprisingly, researchers have long found that communal relationships tend to be healthiest. They use “communal strength” as a measure of how much a person is willing to give for the sake of the other, so that the woman who is willing to uproot her life for the sake of her husband’s career is said to have a very high communal strength. Research shows that higher communal strength predicts greater satisfaction and longer-lasting relationships.

Keep that communal-exchange distinction in your mind. I suspect that your marriage is largely communal, at least when you are at your best. In fact, the Bible demands this kind of relationship when it describes a marriage in which a wife joyfully submits to her husband’s leadership while he joyfully imitates Christ through other-focused, self-sacrificing servant-leadership.

. . .

What is the big takeaway? Not all motives are equal. Most married couples continue to have sex, but the most satisfied couples have sex for the most satisfying reason. Husbands or wives who pursue their spouse’s sexual satisfaction are the most sexually satisfied and bring an extra measure of stability to their relationship. Wife: Pursue your husband for his benefit. Husband: Pursue your wife for her benefit. If sex is integral to a marriage (which it is, according to 1 Corinthians 7) then we can best enjoy the gift and obey the command by pursuing one another for the best and highest of motives.

IRS Agrees to Target and Monitor Churches, Because Angry Atheists Demanded It? – OK, of course this violates the Constitution and is just another example of how the Obama administration is indescribably corrupt, but don’t you like the idea of atheists and IRS employees having to hear the Gospel over and over?

One can only image how a Lois Lerner, the former senior IRS official at the center of the IRS targeting scandal who called conservatives “a**holes,” “TeRrorists” (capitalizing the “R” to emphasize the point), and “crazies,” would implement the targeting of churches and which churches she would choose to monitor.

NAACP Leader: Right to Abortion Same as Right to Eat at Lunch CounterAbortion kills blacks at a rate three times that of whites, and the Democrats’ platform calling for taxpayer-funded abortions will increase that.

We believe the right to reproductive freedom is as basic as the right to eat at the lunch counter.

Friendly reminder: “Reproductive freedom/rights/health/etc.” are false, Orwellian terms.  They apply to birth control, not abortion, because abortion destroys a human being who has already been reproduced. That is a scientific fact confirmed by any mainstream embryology textbook and basic logic.  It is a deadly and evil phrase.  Yes, they have a right to reproduce, but no, they shouldn’t have the right to kill human beings who have already been reproduced.

Yes, the border crisis began after Obama started messing around with executive amnesties – Those pushing the DREAM Act and such are responsible for this.  They should have known it would encourage smugglers to bring more people over.

Washington Post Getting Closer to Accusing the SBA of Fraud – I detest crony capitalism.  This is something that both Leftists and Tea Partiers should be able to agree on, but even the media is afraid to expose the Democrat and Republican leaders that make this happen.  The solution is smaller government.  More money to spend inevitably leads to more lobbying and corruption.  But the Left views government as god so they don’t want to shrink it.

J.D. has seen the federal investigations that found large businesses are committing felony federal contracting fraud by making “false certifications”, “improper certifications” and by engaging in “vendor deception”.

J.D. knows not only has the SBA refused to adopt any legislation or policies to stop the rampant fraud and abuse in federal small business contracting programs, they are actually taking public comment on a new policy to encourage and protect fraud by creating a “safe harbor from fraud penalties” for firms that commit felony federal contracting law. (Why don’t you do a story of that J.D.?)

Liberal Jonathan Alter: America needs to mandate corporate loyalty oaths – I think Leftist is a more accurate term than Liberal, but the points against Alter are valid.  The idea is creepy for starters, and it would be ineffective anyway (as if multi-billion $ corporations wouldn’t find a way around them!).  Sadly, the obvious solution never occurs to the Leftists: Maybe if you made it better to incorporate here than elsewhere then people would stay.
